Well, I bet your dying to know how my blind date went. Was...interesting. The Korean guy Michael wasn't bad looking, a pretty good dresser and well mannered.
When I arrived (a few minuites late. Ooops) he commented that I looked nice and I knew he meant it because of his tone and the look of approval on his face so that's always nice. We went to a place called New York Billiards just a few shops down from the school I teach at. And all my time playing pool at the pub paid off because we won a few games. The balls were much lighter than they are back home though but the place was upscale. They served us a container of cold ice tea.
Michael asked me how many Korean boyfriends I had I said: "How many foreign girlfriends do you have?"
He didn't know I wansn't serious so he answered: "none."
I decided to play a little more and with a straight face asked: "so your married? Three kids?"
Confused, he takes a moment to answer: "no," he says seriously, "I'm single." Of course I already know this so I just smile. "Oh."
Some of the questions were much more commical though. At one point he turned to me and said: "Where's my fiance?"
"What?"
"Where's my fiance. I'm 36 years old and very lonely."
"Oh, yes, 36 years old. Time to get married."
"Yes." He said.
It was all very romantic.
It was funny being asked all the cliche date questions, 'what are your hobbies',' what do you do on weekends', 'what's your favourite colour' and even, 'what's your ideal type'. I nearly spit out my drink when he asked me that one and thought, no you didn't just ask me that did you?
Oh, but he did. When he asked me for my phone number I sidestepped that one by saying: "johnny has it." and dropped it at that. Oh, but he was a nice enough guy. Hope he finds his 'fiance' -- I'm just not her.
Setting people up on 'blind dates' is a routine practice here. Actually, it's the only way Korean's meet people and go out on dates (excepting meeting in university).
Johnny seemed to have a good time with his date "Charlotte" though she was messaging her boyfriend in Seoul most of the evening whenever she got the chance. She explained later that they were having another 'fight'.
Johnny came over the next day bummed. Seems even though 10 days have passed he's no closer to Charlotte than when he first started. She did send him a text message saying he was "a dear friend." Poor Johnny. Free english lessons are a bitch.
In other news, this week has been significantly colder. Think winter is finally on it's way. I bought a new laptop and have wireless internet access from home -- and for free I think as I didn't sign up just clicked "connect" then "wireless" and surprisingly it worked! Louise thinks the building is wired as she read that about these new high-tech buildings. Whatever, I'm lovin' it.
